Course Selections
(a.k.a. Enrollment - Typically Occurs in January/February
of Each School Year)

***Remember when you email or call your counselor, be sure to write the students FULL NAME in the SUBJECT line and to state the students FULL NAME and SPELL the LAST name in the phone message.***

1. Enrollment Presentations:
Counselors make class presentations to assist students with course selections. The presentations are done in either a history class or english class.

Viewing these presentations, provides information to better understand how courses are selected, including course sequences for the 4 core subjects (i.e. the order that Math classes are taken).

Below are the links for the 2019-2020 School Year Enrollment/Course Selection PowerPoint Presentations:
2019-2020 Course Selection Presentation (Shown to Students)
(Please note these may vary slightly from what was shown during the class presentation, and is subject to change due to any alterations to the SBISD Course Catalog.)

If you have questions about the presentations above, additional information is available in the SBISD Course Catalog.  Click below:
SBISD Course Selection Catalog: Formerly known as Program of Studies

2. Endorsements/Pathways:

Endorsement/Pathways offered at SHS as of 01/2018
Information about Endorsements/pathways will be explained to each student during the students annual one-on-one conference with his/her Alpha Counselor.  Endorsements and Pathways are also discussed annually during the course selection PowerPoint presentations

At a certain point in time, the endorsements/pathways will be available for view in the DESKTOP version of Skyward.  As of 2/14/2018, endorsements and 4 year plans can be viewed at home in Skyward.

3. The Process for Enrollment:
The enrollment process for your 9th-11th grader will be as follows:

A.  Counselors will conduct presentations (linked above) and answer questions during select History or English class periods in either January or February.

B.  After the presentations, students will then go to the library and enter their choices into Skyward.  They will return home with a pink copy of the courses input into Skyward that day.  AT THIS POINT, THE COURSES ARE NOT FINALIZED.  PLEASE CONSIDER THIS A PREVIEW TIME AND STARTING POINT FOR ENROLLMENT WITH YOUR CHILD.

You may view the PowerPoints above for each grade level which will show you what your student saw during the classroom presentations.

C.  After the initial course selection (or enrollment) is complete, there will be 3 more opportunities to change courses.  Additionally, one opportunity is right after enrollment is completed, on campus, where a student can make changes to the course selections at home in Skyward on a desktop computer.
Again, there will be 4 total opportunities to change courses after the initial enrollment period.  This includes the opportunity to change course selections by the student in Skyward after the initial enrollment period and through the 3 mailers sent to the students' home address.

A proposed enrollment course list (NOT a schedule) will be mailed to the students home address listed in Skyward.  Please take a moment to ensure your information is correct in Skyward.
This course selection sheet will be mailed 3 times after the enrollment window.  Changes to any courses selected are to be submitted before the first week of June.

(Please know that we will make every effort to ensure those students impacted by Hurricane Harvey will receive same the mailers/opportunities.  If you do not receive one by April, please communicate to your Alpha Counselor ASAP.)

Each time the mailer arrives at the students home address, the parent or student may WRITE IN THE CHANGES NEEDED OR REQUESTED DIRECTLY ON THE SHEET AND TURN THE SHEET INTO HIS/HER APPROPRIATE ALPHA COUNSELOR.  Please read the sheet carefully in case there is a change in submission procedures.

It is strongly suggested that any changes to course selections be indicated on the mailer form; changes submitted by email (without above forms) are STRONGLY DISCOURAGED as they may not be received or processed in a timely manner.  Pay close attention to any dates listed on the mailer that will come home 3 times with course selections listed for the student.

THIS IS A CHANGE IN PROCEDURE BEGINNING AUGUST 2018.

There will be no changes made to a students course list (selections) unless an administrator has approved the change.  There are very specific circumstances that would allow changes to a students schedule/course selections at or before the start of school in August. This means that in August, the student will receive a  schedule on the first day of school.  From the first day of school forward, there will be very limited reasons to make changes until the END of the semester, especially for electives.

There are options for students who wish to move from an AP/PAP class to Grade Level and will be communicated to the students during the Principal grade level talks at the start of the school year.  Additional information on procedures for dropping from an AP/PAP class(es) can be found in the Course Catalog on the Spring Branch ISD main website. We ask that all students in AP/PAP course(s) attempt to stay in for the first 6 weeks grading period.

By the first day of classes in August, there will have been 4 opportunities to make changes to courses selected. The opportunities include: After the initial enrollment period, the student may make changes directly through Skyward.  The student may also make changes through filling out information on the 3 mailers sent directly to the students home address that lists the courses selected/enrolled and how to make changes to those courses. If by April there has been no mailer received, please contact your Alpha Counselor for assistance. Please note, this process is in place, so that class counts, teacher hiring/staffing can be done in a timely manner with the appropriate staff in place to teach courses.

If you need information on the types of courses/electives to take, please go to the Course Catalog Tab within this website or search the web for - Course Catalog Spring Branch ISD (or Program of Studies Spring Branch ISD).

4. Other SHS Enrollment Notes:

*Future Athletes:
Your sport will take two places in your 8 course slots. There is only one exception, Team Tennis. If the sport is a 'cut sport' the coach will email the counselor and changes to a students schedule will be done by the counselor. These changes can come at any time determined by the athletic department and may change one or more of the courses on your schedule. If you are am Incoming Freshman wanting to play baseball, you will not enroll in a baseball period, but will need to connect with the baseball coach on how to try out for the team.

** Guthrie Center Courses:
Take two places in a schedule, meaning two class periods on a student’s schedule.

***GT students will not be able to choose GT specified at the time of scheduling and must choose the PAP/AP section which will service GT students appropriately.  The students who are GT are clustered in PAP/AP classes with other GT students. There just will not be a GT label on the actual class on the students schedule.

****Changing of Electives:
Due to scheduling conflicts and class capacity, electives may be subject to change. While this is not ideal, we will work to ensure you/your student has a full schedule with many opportunities.***

*****Course Options: A student is free to choose to enroll in the classes they want at the time of enrollment as long as the student has met the pre-requisites and the appropriate grade level requirements.

******Prerequisites:
There are prerequisites set for certain classes, and counselors advise based on those prerequisites. Also, some prerequisites, or sequencing of classes, are set forth by the State of Texas and counselors will advise based on those standards.

Therefore, any decision to select classes for which the counselor does NOT advise and the consequences that may arise from that decision, are the responsibility of the student/parents/guardian. The Alpha Counselor advises on information provided through SBISD in the Course Selection Catalog.

If a student speaks with a university representative and the university entry criteria of a desired college/university goes beyond or differs from the SHS sequencing of classes, it is again the responsibility of the student/parent to relay/present that information to the counselor. Alpha Counselors will work together to ensure all credits are completed for that particular university/college/training program while keeping in alignment with the State of Texas Graduation Requirements.

Any correspondence about courses or sequencing of courses that go beyond the advisement of the Alpha Counselor such as emails or date of phone conversations/meetings and any written information from those meetings, will be retained by the counselor. Any correspondence such as email or date of phone conversations/meetings will not be a part of a students permanent record or transcript.

5. Courses and Changes:
Please understand that the State of Texas is constantly reviewing and adding information that needs to be updated, therefore, changes are inevitable to courses or sequencing of endorsements.

***There is always the possibility that a course will not be offered due to various reasons or that Endorsements/Pathways have requirement changes. Every effort will be made to ensure continued student success.  It will be a collective effort and patience and understanding is greatly appreciated as we work toward creating a great high school experience.
