DUAL CREDIT CLASSES WITH HCC

Dual Credit at SHS is a program that provides students an opportunity to take college courses based on a local agreement between SBISD and Houston Community College.  Courses are taught at SHS by teachers who are also HCC Adjunct Professors.  Students are concurrently enrolled in high school courses and college courses.  These specific courses also meet Texas Essential Knowledge and Skill requirements for high school coursework.

Below are a few of our most frequently asked questions regarding Dual Credit:
What classes are offered as Dual Credit?
ONLY offered to Seniors:

English IV DC (English 1301 / English 1302)
Pre Requisite:  Eniglish III GL, ACC or AP

English IV ECP (English 2322/2323) / Government ECP
Pre Requisite:  Eniglish III DE and acceptance of UT OnRamps Credit

Is it possible that my SHS grade and HCC grade can differ?
YES!  Your Dual Credit teacher is teaching and grading different assignment to meet different criteria for each entity.  There might be a major research paper or project that must be included in the SHS grade to satisfy TEKS, but is not considered for HCC at all, and vice versa.

How much do I pay for Dual Credit classes?
Nothing!  HCC does not charge tuition or out of district fees for dual credit students, but students will be responsible for purchasing textbooks and scantrons.  They will be offered at a reduced cost based on financial need.

How do I apply for Dual Credit classes?
Complete the HCC online application and include the HCC ID and Dual Credit application found in your counselor's office or under the Resources tab of this website.

Where do I turn in my application?
Return the completed application to your alpha counselor.

What do I turn in to my counselor?
The application consists of:
  • Dual Credit Application (must include HCC ID number)
  • HCC Residency Form
  • HCC Dual Credit Waiver Form
  • Student/Parent Guideline Acknowledgement

What are the most common mistakes made on the Dual Credit application?
  • Not including the HCC ID number
  • Not having parents sign the forms

What if I'm not TSI exempt?
If you're not TSI exempt, you'll need to:
  • Contact HCC for Assess College Readiness and prepare for placement testing
  • Complete the HCC Pre-Assessment Activity and keep a copy for the TSI test administrator
  • Attend a campus TSI testing session at SHS or test at the HCC Testing Center
  • Secure a copy of test results and submit a copy of qualifying test results with the application, if taken at HCC

What if I'm ineligible to take Dual Credit based on my TSI scores?
Tell your alpha counselor as soon as possible so your schedule can be adjusted.

If you're interested in taking any Dual Credit course, please let your counselor know as soon as possible.
